KIDS KITESURFING

We structure our kids kitesurfing lessons differently to adult lessons. Kids learn faster, have shorter attention spans and, most importantly, they need more personal attention to ensure their safety.

The Graykite Tarifa team has been teaching the young and young at heart to kitesurf for over 15 years. This wealth of experience has informed our unique approach to kitesurfing lessons for kids between the ages of 6 and 12.

What’s different abut teaching kids to kitesurf?

Children are impressionable, adaptable and tend to progress quickly. This is largely due to their sense of adventure, highly adaptable motor skills and lust for fun.

Most children decide after their first lesson whether kite surfing is for them. This is why our kids kitesurfing lessons  are designed to let them experience what it’s all about.

Kid’s lessons are shorter than the adult lessons, usually 2 hours. This means the children remain captivated throughout the lesson. We don’t want to burn them out mentally or physically. Safety is our top priority when planning kids kitesurfing lessons.

Why choose Tarifa?

The wide open spaces of Tarifa provide the perfect location for kids to learn kitesurfing. With 11 kilometres white sand beach, averaging over 100 metres wide, the main strand from Los Lances to Punta Paloma is spacious enough to find a safe spot in almost all conditions. There are no hidden hazards in the water and in high season the rescue boats operated by the Sea Angels provide an additional level of safety.

The more sheltered spots at Palmones and Bolonia provide wonderful alternatives to Los Lances if the wind is too strong in Tarifa. And there are also the lagoons at Los Lances, Valdevaqueros and Palmones where your little ones can get the hang of kitesurfing in flat water that only comes up to their waist. And in Tarifa there’s almost always wind, so they’re less likely to end up waiting around for the wind to blow or disappointed that their lesson got cancelled.

All in all, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place for your kids to learn to kitesurf.

How old do you need to be to learn to kitesurf?

Kids should usually be at least 6 years old when they take their first lesson and we put in place many extra safety measures when teaching youngsters. We use a retractable leash throughout their kite and board training which ensures your children are always physically attached to an experienced instructor.

As our young students progress they will be offered more independence, but only when both instructor and youngster are both fully confident they are safe. Graykite’s teaching methodology focuses on positive affirmation in a safe and secure learning environment. This allows youngsters to excel and share our passion for kitesurfing.

Group size

To maximise safety and progress children always learn in a private or semi private lessons. This ensures they get the direct supervision they need. The only other thing they really need is the desire to learn and passion to have fun. Well, that and expert tuition!

High adrenaline fun in a super-safe environment makes learning to kitesurf the experience of a lifetime for many children. Hopefully that’s what they’ll tell you and all their friends back at school!

Do we need to do any preparation?

Kitesurfing combines two dimensions: kite and board. Many kids already have some experience that works to their advantage. This can include sports like skateboarding, snowboarding or small kite flying. Also, any activities that help build balance and co-ordination will help them to master the kite and board – for instance, ballet, football or gymnastics. But there’s nothing specific you or they need to do to prepare.
